Hillsborough charter school relocates after Eno River flooding, community rallies in support
A charter school in Hillsborough destroyed by flooding from Chantal
has temporarily relocated for the upcoming school year.
On Saturday, volunteers gathered at The Expedition School to
help move the school into an event space nearby at the Cloth Mill at Eno River
Mill.
It comes after the record-breaking crest of the Eno River
made a mess of the school. WRAL News previously reported 98% of what was inside the building was a total
loss.
School officials say the amount of volunteer help they
have received since Chantal has been overwhelming.
“Today we thought that we would maybe have 50 or 75 [people].
We planned for that,” said Randi Russel, a support specialist with the school.
Instead, Russel said over 150 people showed up making things
move fast.
“I’m absolutely surprised,” she continued. “But this flood
has shown me that this community can do absolutely anything.”
The Expedition School is a year-round school, and classes
were supposed to start two days ago.
The new start date is August 25.
